Mālama ‘Āina Reforestation ProjectInaugural site planting at Lahainaluna High School. Fourth Planting Day, October 27th, 2024.
We had an incredible day at Lahainaluna High School, rich in history and spirit. Following the Hawaiian moon calendar, we chose an ideal planting day with overcast skies and a cool breeze. The gentle sprinkle that greeted us in the morning turned into a light, refreshing rain just as we finished planting—like a blessing from the land itself.
With around 30 enthusiastic volunteers, we planted nearly 60 ʻulu (breadfruit) trees and 20 papaya trees.
Each plant is now supported by irrigation, giving this young forest the best possible start.

After the wildfires in Lahaina in the summer of 2023, Goldean and her husband Brent launched the Mālamā ‘Āina Reforestation Project. The Mālamā ‘Āina Project focuses on restoring Lahaina’s foothills by replanting indigenous trees such as ulu, milo, and kukui. But this project is more than just planting trees; Mālamā ‘Āina is on a mission to heal the land, foster community bonds, and promote ecological well-being for Maui. In this beautiful documentary, Goldean personally introduces the project. During the second planting event, many volunteers came together to establish a fire break by planting banana trees at Lahaina Intermediate School, continuing the efforts to reforest Maui’s westside.
